Tortoli and Girasole have a good choice of bars, restaurants and other services, with the larger town of Tortoli and it's associated port, Arbatax, with good ferry services to other parts of Sardinia and the mainland, plus the tourist Marina's of Arbatax and Santa Maria Navarrese.

Sardinian history experts believe the present village to be the ancient Sulci. As far back as the time of Caracalla references were made to Sulci as an important station on the eastern coast of Sardinia. Distances referred to other villages reported in Roman documents indicate that today’s Girasole is to be identified with the ancient city Sulci, whose inhabitants the Greek Ptolemy also called sulcitani.

Historically Girasole is one of the most important villages of Ogliastra having stood on the same site for over 3000 years. The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans in 200 BC decreed its strategic importance as a seasonal stopover. Subjected to the heavy attacks of the Barbagia inhabitants first and then to Vandal raids in the 6th century, the village withstood the Arab incursions of the following centuries. Thanks to its seaport, it became a flourishing centre during the Pisan and Aragonese domination.

Girasole is separated from Lotzorai to the north east by the Rio Girasole, in the Iscrixedda area; to the south the boundary with Tortolì is partly marked by the pond and to the northwest by Villagrande. It is situated in a favourable geographic position on the Orientale Sarda road, easily reached from all Sardinia, 141 km from Cagliari, 171 km from Olbia and only 4 km from the port of Arbatax and 3 km from the airport of Tortolì.

Girasole is a small village, only 1 km from the sea, surrounded by unspoilt countryside in the centre of the Ogliastra plain. Over the last twenty years the population has almost doubled thanks to the strong influence of tourism in the area. Girasole’s territory extends for about 13 km and farming plays an important role in the community.

The Ogliastra coasts are splendid oases set between sea and rock, rugged nature to dazzle us with some of the most fascinating marine landscapes of the Mediterranean. Leaving from the north we encounter the renowned coves of Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé, accessible only by boat or on foot; further south there are the beautiful beaches of Tancau, Girasole, Orrì, Cea ,Barisardo, Cardedu, Coccorrocci and the gulf of Sarrala.

The modern Tourist Port of Baunei and Saint Maria Navarrese has been inaugurated in 1998, a sure and pleasant shelter in the oriental Coast of Sardinia that can entertain up to 340 boats with a maximum length up to 30 meters.

The personnel is competent and cordial and the variety of the offered services are able to satisfy the different demands of the diportistis. From June 2005 the port has been endowed with the 'Pequod', the lifter to otherwise allow the access on board of the skilled people, becoming so the 'first accessible port' of Sardinia.

In 2006 for the second consecutive time the Tourist Port has gotten the prestigious recognition Blue Flag of the tourist landings, that is assigned for quality of the landing, services and safety measures, environmental education and information.

The Tourist Port every year increases his presences thanks to the quality of the services that offers and to the magic scenery where the is drawn the port that from the sense of the nature thanks to the green that surrounds it.

The weather in Sardinia is typically Mediterranean. During the cold season, prevalently mild, humid mistral winds from the northwest blow while in spring and summer, the winds from Africa are traditionally hot and dry. The north-western region is rainy while the climate in the south is much dryer.

Beginning from Santa Maria Navarrese the landscape changes completely and from a jagged coast from imposing rocks and cliffs where they open sudden and sheltered calette, he passes to a characterized coast from wide beaches,

Tancau and Lido delle Rose of Lotzorai and the Beach of Girasole, and particularly beginning from Capo Bellavista, a shore of ample beaches starts of thin sand and low waters, Porto Frailis, San Gemiliano, Beach of Orrì, Cea, the Beachof Barisardo with its Tower that he will extend up to the Beach of Cardedu and Perd'e Pera where the rocks they push him up to the sea creating the golfettis of Coccorrocci and Su Sirboni that marks the border with the shore of the Beach of Tertenia, with Capo Sferracavallo and the Beach of Sarrala.

On the Ogliastra coast, in a natural park with a wealth of plateaux and plains, artificial lakes and torrents, forests and bush, beaches, buttes and outcrops lies Cardedu.

Founded immediately after a landside partly destroyed Gairo in 1951, the village, which for some time was kept under Gairo’s jurisdiction, became a municipality of his own in 1984.A sandy seabed with limpid waters and a coast where dazzling coves suddenly appear to break the long white stretches of sand and reefs, pebbles and red porphyry sketch a gorgeous landscape, variegated, rugged and uncontaminated.

Cardedu is also a favourite seaside resort for windsurfers because of the strong sirocco winds blowing at 10-15 knots. There are also archaeological treasures scattered on the territory: nuraghi, domus de janas and a scared well (su Presoneddu).

However, being a fairly recent settlement, no historical monument of significance is located inside the village; worth mentioning, though, is the ancient country church Madonna di Buoncamino and the picturesque main village square, a meeting point and a public “living room” for the whole community.

Quiet in winter, Cardedu comes to life in the summer, during the festival “Insieme a Cardedu”, with a vast array of interesting events, from music and dancing to theatre and folklore, for the joy of both residents and tourists.

The whole area of Ogliastra includes fine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, cliffs which fall sheer to the sea, age-old woods and dry desert plains. Sailing along the wonderful coast it possible to admire some of the most beautiful bays of the Mediterranean: Cala Gonone, Cala Luna, Cala Goloritzè are nowadays very well-know destinations for tourism.

As a matter of fact the whole Orosei gulf has been appointed by the EU as SIC (Site of Communitarian Importance), awards given to sites characterised by the presence of important species of flora and fauna.

One of the most famous and popular site is the Grotta del Bue Marino (Sea cow's cave), once shelter for the seals, today in danger of extinction.

The species of animals are numerous and include vultures, predatory birds, moufflons and wild boars, mostly in the internal area. Arbatax is a small village quite close to the sea, with a nice port. Its name reminds to the Sarancens raids, quite frequent in the past. Today Arbatax is an important tourist destination thanks to its beaches and its typical seafood.

Tortoli' and Santa Maria Navarrese are two other important tourist sites. In particular, Santa Maria Navarrese shows an interesting church, dated back to the XI century. The legend tells that the Navarra Princess, victim of a shipwrecked coming back from the Holy Land, made contact with this land saving herself from death and ordered to build the church as sign of thanks.

It is not easy to make a list of all the amazing beauties of Sardinia. Places like San Teodoro, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Poltu Quatu, and Baia Sardinia are only some of the charming locations that deserve a visit.

Visiting the Maddalena Archipelago and its “seven sisters,” the main islands of the archipelago, and sailing along the coast of the Maddalena National Park with its lively seabeds, perfect for scuba-diving lovers, is an incredible experience.

Caprera, the second biggest Island after Maddalena, is full of pastures and pinewoods, and shows its visitors the places where Garibaldi lived, with a house museum in the typical Mediterranean vegetation, which guards the memorabilia of the “hero of two worlds,” as well as his and his family’s grave.

Sailing from Caprera to the Bocche di Bonifacio, you will be struck by the beauty of Budelli Island, wild and uninhabited, with its enchanting Rosa beach, a natural masterpiece named for the pink hues of its special corals and shells.
