Albert Schweitzer (Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer) born January 14, 1875 in Kaysersberg and died September 4, 1965 in Lambaréné (Gabon), is a doctor, pastor and Protestant theologian, philosopher and musician Alsatian.
The hospital he developed in the equatorial forest on the banks of the Ogooué from 1913 made him known throughout the world. In 1952, the award of the Nobel Peace Prize brought him consecration and considerable media visibility.
A prominent figure of the 20th century, "universal man", he is at the same time an emblematic figure of Alsace, liberal theology or admirers of Johann Sebastian Bach. He is sometimes seen as a forerunner of humanitarian action, ecology, antispecism and nuclear disarmament.
The notion of "respect for life" (Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben) and his indignation at suffering are at the heart of the approach of Albert Schweitzer, who wanted himself "a man at the service of other men", turned towards the action.
Nourished by a double German and French culture, he enjoys an international aura, but, with the exception of his native Alsace, his work remains little known in France, where it was released later. The prolific author has left many works, sermons, letters and documents, not yet exploited. On their side, witnesses, disciples and detractors, in Europe or in Africa, bring contrasted points of view, which the research endeavors to put into perspective. His work has been distinguished by the Nathan Katz Heritage Award (2015).
